I was recently away for a while, and when I returned I had an PM from a member I didn't know thanking me for my mention of www.hereinmyhead.com. I didn't recall doing that recently but didn't give it much thought. The next time I tried to visit that site, I started getting pop-ups saying I needed Active X Controls from Microsoft Corporation. Initially I thought it was odd, but again I was looking for something in a hurry, and glossed over it. Then it popped-up and asked for access to my email. I instantly broke my internet connection and rebooted, refreshed my virus definitions and did a deep scan. Sure enough it was a trojan; which wikipedia defines as:
- Trojan horse (computing)
- In the context of computing and software, a Trojan horse, or simply trojan, is a piece of software which appears to perform a certain action but in fact performs another such as a computer virus. A simple example of a Trojan horse would be a program named "waterfalls.scr" where its author claims it is a free waterfall screensaver. When run, it instead unloads hidden programs, commands, scripts, or any number of commands with or without the user's knowledge or consent. Malicious Trojan Horse programs are often used to circumvent protection systems in effect creating a vulnerable system to allow unauthorized access to the user's computer.
While it is important to run protective software on your computer on a regular basis; I cannot urge you more strongly if you have been to hereinmyhead lately -Update your Anti-Virus software and run it.
If anyone knows the site webmistress, please let her know that she needs to check things out over there. I suspect she doesn't know.
