URGENT VIRUS/TROJAN WARNING
I was recently away for a while, and when I returned I had an PM from a member I didn't know thanking me for my mention of www.hereinmyhead.com. I didn't recall doing that recently but didn't give it much thought. The next time I tried to visit that site, I started getting pop-ups saying I needed Active X Controls from Microsoft Corporation. Initially I thought it was odd, but again I was looking for something in a hurry, and glossed over it. Then it popped-up and asked for access to my email. I instantly broke my internet connection and rebooted, refreshed my virus definitions and did a deep scan. Sure enough it was a trojan; which wikipedia defines as:
- Trojan horse (computing)
- In the context of computing and software, a Trojan horse, or simply trojan, is a piece of software which appears to perform a certain action but in fact performs another such as a computer virus. A simple example of a Trojan horse would be a program named "waterfalls.scr" where its author claims it is a free waterfall screensaver. When run, it instead unloads hidden programs, commands, scripts, or any number of commands with or without the user's knowledge or consent. Malicious Trojan Horse programs are often used to circumvent protection systems in effect creating a vulnerable system to allow unauthorized access to the user's computer.
While it is important to run protective software on your computer on a regular basis; I cannot urge you more strongly if you have been to hereinmyhead lately -Update your Anti-Virus software and run it.
If anyone knows the site webmistress, please let her know that she needs to check things out over there. I suspect she doesn't know.

I just thought I'd add to this thread for people to be careful of anyone attempting to direct them to a site they wouldn't normally visit. This can be dangerous for many reasons and I would recommend that people take every precaution necessary to make sure that personal details are safe, and that your computer is safe from viruses/spyware etc. There are many websites set up to deliberately harm you or your computer, so please be careful ewf!
Ajtcl, I'm glad you were okay with it. It wasn't until I posted it that I sort of had an "uh-oh, another disembodied body part, maybe I should pull it" moment.
FFF, I'm sorry you got caught in that. As I understand it, (second-hand) the issue is being worked, and things should be fixed very soon. Which I'm glad for, that site has a special spot in my heart.

see.... now this is a lesson in why you shouldn't stay to long away fom your friends.
If I had seen this post last week I could have avoided alot of things. I visted here in my head and my computer froze and crashed. Something is on the loose over there and someone needs to let the admisartors know, especially if they have contact resource that don't involve physically logging into the site. What I got was pretty nasty, evey time I'd log back on to my server the hereinmyheadweb page was still sitting in intro which would refreze my account, which followed with crashing and thus the viscious cycle would re-evolve. My friend here could have saved me alot of toruble had I not been MIA for so long.. *gigglz* It pays to have connections. But you have to use em to see the results!

if you know me so well tell me which hand I use
BC,
Nope, I just thought it was funny. But I always had an image of a pair of ears walking around on little feet. The eyes just seemed to stare. That is all that creeped me about them.

Misty, They aren't, they are part of a stock image that I changed -a lot. I just wanted to do something saying "Ear With Feet Forever" visually. The idea has been repeated a lot around here, although I think Ajtcl may have been the first to mention it, so I nod to him on this one. (Although I suspect the ear with no body attached may bother him a little; since eyes alone bothered him before.)

Bending - those feet look like Tori's - is that true?
No, really - I saw her feet in a video once... somewhere? maybe?
hope all is well...

Normally I'd correct you and say "kicked in the balls," but obviously the perpetrator is Sans Testis!

Well that is good anyway, that they are aware and on it. Whoever did that deserves a sharp kick in the shins.

Hi BC and AJ, I was just there today and they have a warning posted on the top page. They have found the viruses and they are trying to get rid of them.
Please be aware that there are many Anti-virus and Spyware applications on the market. As an IT professional, I strongly recommend Symantec products. McAffee and some of the others just aren't as good. Take this as an informed opinion. Also, look out for free trial and internet spyware and virus scans. I'll tell you this now. MOST OF THEM ARE SCAMS! Go with a well-known product. I also suggest using Mozilla's Firefox browser. Internet Explorer is part of the Windows OS. It is a core component, hence it is vulnerable to all kinds of attacks. Firefox and other third-party browsers separate the OS from the internet because they are not part of the OS. Additionally, there is a plug-in for Firefox called "No Script." It is a wonderful tool for controlling what the internet can do on your machine. I tend to shy away from software firewalls like ZoneAlarm because inherently, they are still software. And as the old adage goes, garbage in, garbage out. If your OS is compromised, any additional software layer is also compromised. Also, with spyware software like Spybot 3D, you loose system resources. And for many who are using older machines, those resources can be the difference between a pleasant evening of surfing verses waiting.... waiting, and more waiting!
Remember, this is simply my professional opinion. Take it for what it is worth... Oh and safe computing.
One last note, always stay up-to-date on your OS and definitions. Microsoft is very good about creating malicious software removal tools. They work in the background as part of the OS and are very good in conjunction with a good anti-virus program. In most cases you will be safe.

lol, Thanks dear. I know it threw me for a loop, and made me freak out for a couple of seconds. So I figured I'd try to save anyone else from the worry and the work of figuring out where it came from, and if possible spare them. In fact if you Google search the name of the site, it now has a link that says "This site may harm your computer." right under the name. YIKES.
If you follow the warning link it explains why it was labelled that and what to do if you need help.
