Forum Questions?
There are some of us who have been here on the forum for quite a while and have picked up some useful knowledge here and there. And while we aren't moderators, or able to change the structure of things, we can probably answer a lot of your forum related questions. So I thought that, whether it was how to log directly into your private message inbox, how to post a picture in your signature line, or how to write in italics; you could post your questions here and those that know the answers could respond. It could even become a sort of FAQ spot for people to look for answers.
It just seemed like a way to help so that no one has to stumble around trying to learn things on their own.

Almost Rosey was actually released as a promo single back in November. It was a digital download only and there was a "radio edit" available which clocks in at 3:40 rather than the 5:22 of the album version.
Yes I see it too, very strange.WAKE UP site admins and take care of this.
It's now also showing newly posted threads in amongst the list of 'replies' to each thread, which is always the same for me too. This is stupid.
How can an official site have so very many administration problems? Not happy, Epic/Sony!!!
Does anyone know WHAT THE FLYING F*CK is going on with the format? As of now, it is showing me on every thread the responses posted in chronological order from most recent to oldest without regard to subject or anything else. For example this thread had Vampiro's blog at the top below the question. He's an interesting guy, but clearly things are scrambled and that doesn't belong here.
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?

It's okay Dear.
I've got you covered.
If you have any other questions, about this or something else let me know.

Thanks a lot, BC!! I really appreciate your help. I'm at my parent's right now, but once I get home (tomorrow) I will try and follow your fine descriptions and see, if I can figure it out
)
Once again, thanks!! (Here, I would've loved to post a really cool smiley, but these don't exist on this site

"Excuse me, but can I be you for a while? My dog won't bite if you sit real still"
I definitely think of you as my friend AH.
Sorry things were still fuzzy. That is what happens when I pass something on without testing it first.
So here is how it works:
After you select both the image and the text; right-click with your mouse on top of that.
The little list that comes up has a spot that says "Grouping" (it is the 7th one down from the top); select Group.
Then while they are still both selected, right-click again and this time choose "Save As Picture".
You then give it the new name in the top box, and in the "Save As Type" under it, click the arrow to see the different file options and choose one of the first four (jpeg, png, tiff, bitmap). Then save.
You can test your new picture in another viewer (like Paint
) before uploading to a site like photobucket. After that it is just a matter of an 'img' tag to post it.
If you get stuck just let me know. I don't mind being a nerd about this stuff.
I like to help, and if I already know something sharing is no big deal. And if like this it is something I don't know, then I can learn. I just ask that you are patient while I figure it out.
--

Okay, here's how it went... I found my picture, and I was able to type in the text that I wanted.. It turned out really pretty and I was so happy
But I couln't figure out how to lock the text to the picture
I tried everything, but nothing worked...
(I so deserve you a big favour!!
)
I'm so sorry to keep asking you, BC - but is there any way you could find out how to do?
Love, AH

"Excuse me, but can I be you for a while? My dog won't bite if you sit real still"
Thanks a lot, BC! You're such a good friend (can I call you my friend?) and if it wasn't because of you I would know nothing about anyhing technical at all
I'll give your directions a try right away...

"Excuse me, but can I be you for a while? My dog won't bite if you sit real still"
Okay, I'm crap at Power Point, so I haven't tried this, but these are the directions I was given.
Open Power Point.
Make a slide.
Place your photo on the slide.
Place a text box on top of the photo, and set the background of that box to transparent/clear.
Put the lyrics you want, in the way that you want them, in that box.
Select both the photo and text box, and lock them together.
Now that PP thinks of it as one image/slide, select that and save it as a graphic.
Be sure you give it a new name so you don't lose your original file name. If that doesn't work or make sense let me know, and I'll give it a few tries and see if I can figure out how it works.
--

Hey BC!!
I appreciate it a lot! I do have Power Point (the edition from 2003)...
It was very kind of you to ask around
So I'm listening
--
"Excuse me, but can I be you for a while? My dog won't bite if you sit real still"
Hmm. Well I know what I'd use, but it it what I use for all my image editing (and very expensive). And when people ask me about Paint, I usually tell them it is like trying to paint the Sistine Chapel with a dirty stick. I REALLY hate it.
I did ask around, and found out a way to do it if you have Power Point. Do you?
--

Hey, it's me again
Well, I don't know if this is an actual forum question, but I'm going to ask you in here anyway.. How to do, when you want to write something on a picture. Like, I have a beautiful picture of Tori, and I really want to write some lyrics on it and then add it in here on my avatar... So I tried to do it in 'Paint', but when writing there was a bit white frame behing the text (which was not my intention). I can't find any other programs in which I can add text to the pictures.. Do any of you know what I can do?
Thanks a lot!!

"Excuse me, but can I be you for a while? My dog won't bite if you sit real still"
I just tried to post a new topic- an important one. and it won't let me do that either. I have no idea what the hell is going on, but somebody needs to sort it out.
My post:
URGENT VIRUS/TROJAN WARNING
I was recently away for a while, and when I returned I had an PM from a member I didn't know thanking me for my mention of
www.hereinmyhead.com. I didn't recall doing that recently but didn't give it much thought. The next time I tried to visit that site, I started getting pop-ups saying I needed Active X Controls from Microsoft Corporation. Initially I thought it was odd, but again I was looking for something in a hurry, and glossed over it. Then it popped-up and asked for access to my email. I instantly broke my internet connection and rebooted, refreshed my virus definitions and did a deep scan. Sure enough it was a trojan; which wikipedia defines as:While it is important to run protective software on your computer on a regular basis; I cannot urge you more strongly if you have been to hereinmyhead lately -Update your Anti-Virus software and run it.
If anyone knows the site webmistress, please let her know that she needs to check things out over there. I suspect she doesn't know.
--

Hopefully this is an exception but I just got a new screen when I tried to create a new forum topic that did not allow it!!! I'll try again but this would be really sad!
--
The sexiest thing is trust.
It's just happened to me when I was posting a link. there's an image below every post of yours, AH, so that's why it occurs every time you post (hah! mystery solved
)
lol)
however, I don't think it's the most desired moderation ever, is it? I've never seen any spam here (except for some comments of mine
Hey again!! I'm the one eternally having questions
Now, whenever I want to post something in here, the forum says that what I'm posting might be spam, so I have to fill in a formular of 5 letters in order to be able to post :S Do you guys experience the same thing?? It's kind of lame, I think
Thanks and take care!!
Love, AH

"Excuse me, but can I be you for a while? My dog won't bite if you sit real still"
Yeah - I kind of had my 'Tori history' in there; all of my blogs were Tori related, and it's sad to see them gone
What'll be the next thing they remove?
--
"Excuse me, but can I be you for a while? My dog won't bite if you sit real still"
I'm afraid that ALL the blog posts have been removed! that's not a pity in my case, but I did like some other EWF's blogs
it's not fair, really...
They've removed my blog inputs!! Why did they do that?
I kind of liked it...
--
"Excuse me, but can I be you for a while? My dog won't bite if you sit real still"
Well, I feel better knowing it isn't just me. Maybe it has to do with the number of times you start a new paragraph. Maybe trying to keep blocks of text together?
--

It's weird.. It does so on some pages, and then not on others... This forum is getting more and more confusing
--
"Excuse me, but can I be you for a while? My dog won't bite if you sit real still"
Hmm, that isn't true for me, but maybe it has to do with my screen settings.
--

Hey everybody!
Am I right in saying that our posts are now shown in their full length?? Without being cut off when they're too long??
--
"Excuse me, but can I be you for a while? My dog won't bite if you sit real still"
There are three types of lists that you can place here using html. They are definition, unordered, and ordered. I think we should start with definitions.
The benefit of using the code for definitions is that you can post things without having to try to arrange how it will look on the screen.
By now you've probably noticed that when you click 'submit' spaces or places where you have used the 'return'/'enter' key have been removed. For the purpose of writing things like definitions, this code will fix that for you. Although for the record I have to admit it is a series of tags used together, but don't let that discourage you.
So, if I wanted to explain to someone what a "EWF" or "Toriphile" was, I'd probably use this tag; and here is how it works.
I start with an opening angle bracket (<) and then type the letters 'dl', (which are short for definition list), and then the closing angle bracket (>).
↓
So far: <dl>
↓
Now I'll need to chose my first definition term, for the example I'll use EWF. Then I type a new opening angle bracket (<), the letters 'dt', (for definition term), then a closing angle bracket (>). After that will be the term EWF; after that I will close the definition term tag.
↓
Now it looks like this:
<dl>
<dt> EWF</dt>
↓
Now I need to write the part that will be the definition. So I need to write the tag for definition descriptions. So I open yet another angle bracket (<), and then type the letters 'dd', (which as you've guessed by now is short for definition description), and a closing angle bracket (>). Then type my definition; in this case it will be: "an abbreviation of the endearment Tori used at the end of her 'Dew Drop Inn' tour in 9/16/96 - Akron, Ohio. She said "just know that I really respect you, not as... I hate the word fans, I... I'd like to call you ears with feet, and never use the word fan again, because you're ears with feet."" Then I will close the definition description tag.
↓
Here's how it looks:
<dl>
<dt> EWF</dt>
<dd>An abbreviation of the endearment Tori used at the end of her 'Dew Drop Inn' tour in Akron, Ohio - 9/16/96 . She said "just know that I really respect you, not as... I hate the word fans, I... I'd like to call you ears with feet, and never use the word fan again, because you're ears with feet."</dd>
↓
Now I want to add a second term to my list, "Toriphile". So I write another definition tag, and put Toriphile in it.
↓
With the new term:
<dl>
<dt>Toriphile</dt>
↓
Now I'll add my new definition description tag; write my description, and close that tag. By this point I am finished with my list, so I write the closing tag for my definition list too.
↓
<dl>
<dt>Toriphile</dt>
<dd>A person who has a love of Tori Amos and her music.</dd>
</dl>
↓
Now after all that work, and clicking the submit button, it looks like this:
HarperJ, I've run into that several times. Sometimes it is just really slow to show the change. Like I'd change it on a Monday, it would show the picture I deleted instead of the one I had just uploaded (so irritating), and on Wednesday it would show the new picture. It also seems the more often you want to change the image, the more frequently it acts up.
--

Harper, have you tried hitting the 'refresh page'-button on your keyboard? sometimes it helps
--
Free thinkers are dangerous
Uh, stupid question but how do I change my profile picture? It let me remove the old one and then I tried to upload a new one but it just put my old one back up! AGHHHHHHHHHHHH It's driving me crazy!
If you want to post a picture from your computer, you'll need to upload it to the internet. This is so easy to do it is ridiculous. If you go to a site like www.photobucket.com. You can get an account there for free as easily as you got an account here.
And if you don't to share your album for searches, (if it were a picture of yourself for example), you can use the 'Settings' to make your album 'private'.
--

So now you are going paste the location/source of your image. The way the text is placed on the screen may be broken up. Don't let that bother you; but know that the tag should be written without using the 'Enter'/'Return' key.

↓
Visually:
<img src="http://everythingtori.com/pm/uploads/galleries/
Soundcheck_Wallingford_2.jpg
↓
Then you close your quote, and close the angle bracket (>).
↓
The finished example:
<img src="http://everythingtori.com/pm/uploads/galleries/
Soundcheck_Wallingford_2.jpg">
↓
After clicking 'Submit' it will look like this:
The thing to remember with this and anchor tags is, if you are off by even one letter or character, it won't work. The internet can be like a grammar teacher with a bad attitude, disobey her and you'll be sorry.
You also may have noticed that we didn't close the tag. This is one of this sites quirks. If you do, the whole thing won't work. I don't know why, and it is weird, but it is true.
Also remember you have a limited amount of space. If the picture is very big, it will cut it off. (In fact this is true in my last post for parts of the pictures I used.) The best place to test a picture to see if it will fit in the space allowed is on the blog part of your profile. I do this all the time; so I know that works, and it is the best way to avoid editing a post over and over.
--

I am personally a 'visual learner'. Which means if you tell me how to do something, I'll probably remember it; but if you show me, I'll probably remember it forever. Also sometimes it is just easier to show something than explain it. So that is how I'm going to get into finding the source for pictures.
So let's take little hypothetical walk. Imagine you are surfing around here, and someone says something snarky about the wigs; and you want to show them that Tori's hair is still lovely as ever. So you surf over to the pictures area of 'Everything Tori', and find the picture you want to use.
↓
Then you 'right click' with your mouse on the picture.
↓
↓
Then you select 'properties'.
↓
↓
Then highlight the URL address.
↓
↓
Then 'right click' and copy this location.
↓
Then click 'okay', or just close the 'properties'.
. . . . .Now we are going back to the image tag . . . .
The image tag is a lot like the anchor tag, in that you are telling it to do something and where to get the information to do that.
You start with the angle bracket (<) and the letters 'img' which are short for image, then a space, and then the letters 'src', which are short for source, the equals sign (=), and your opening quote.
So far it looks like this: <img src ="
. . . . . Now for something completely different. . . . . .
I 'm going to jump to another post to explain how to find the source; then we will continue.
--

The purpose of the anchor tag (<a>) is to place a link without all the messy details listed.
It starts with an angle bracket '<' (just like everything else) and the letter 'a' and then we get into the details. You will type in the 'href'. An 'href' is short for hyperlink (commonly called a link) reference.
↓
So far it looks like this: <a href
↓
So you need to tell it what to reference right? So right after you type the href you place a ' = ' . Then you open a pair of quotation marks. This is sort of like saying here is the location, this is the name.
↓
Visually: <a href="
↓
Then you will paste in the link to the place you want people to visit, and the closing quotation mark, and the closing angle bracket '>'.
↓
So far: <a href="http://www.hereinmyhead.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/
normal_ToriAmos.jpg">
↓
Finally, the good part. You type what you want the link to be named. Then you close the tag (we've done this before, so I'm going to assume you know how). Everything in between the starting anchor and closing anchor will be highlighted (blue here) so that people know it is a link.
↓
Here is the completed example: One of my <a href="http://www.hereinmyhead.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/
normal_ToriAmos.jpg">favorite Tori picture</a>s.
↓
And after clicking 'submit' it will look like this:

One of my favorite Tori pictures.
|
|
You should be aware that some people will like this, since it going to clearly label the link. Others will not want to click it because they are worried it is something sinister, like a link to a place they wouldn't want to go, or worse a virus. The thing is that anytime you follow a link it could be fake and go somewhere bad. Only use links from people you trust, or if people you do trust say they liked what the found at the suggested link.
--
You can also combine tags. If you wanted to type something in bold and italics, you could. It would look like this:
I want this <strong><em>word</em></strong> to be in bold italics.
And after clicking the submit button, it will look like this:
I want this word to be in bold italics.
--

In order to write things in bold type you use the 'strong tag'.
I want this <strong>word</strong> to be bold.
And after clicking the submit button, it will look like this:
I want this word to be bold.
--

The most effective way to change the look of your post here on the forum is to use HTML tags. Some of you guys are going to know exactly what I’m talking about about, others won’t have any idea. So I’m going to write these as if I’m explaining it to someone who has never used them.
When posting here, you have the option of adding a pinch of programming here and there to spice things up. There are certain tags (program instructions) that work here, and there is a list of them at the bottom of the screen. I’m going to start by explaining how they work overall, and cover each one later.
All tags live inside angle brackets. They are the little sideways ‘arrow’ looking things one the same keyboard keys as the period and the comma. And they look like this "<" and this ">". (They are also the symbols for 'less than' and 'greater than' .) Any information inside the < > are thought of as instructions or code.
So if you are typing along and place a bracket, instructions for italics, and another bracket to end the instruction (<em>); that code will be applied everything after that. You will have to type more brackets with a ‘stop doing that’ code inside them to get them to only apply it to certain areas.
The way to end a code is to type an angle bracket, a 'forward slash' (It looks like this "/" and shares the key with the question mark.) the original code, and a another angle bracket. (</em>) Then when you click the 'submit' button that code will be applied to your post.
At least that is the way it is supposed to go, sometimes things are a little off around here, but we’ll get to them.
