Tori Amos - One of the Last Real Artists in Today's Music Climate

Hi, I just want to know everyone's thoughts and feelings on the contribution of Hollywood, how it is detrimental to the music industry. I feel its run by too many old men trying to satisfy their midlife crisis. Or not even that, but old uncool men, the midlife crisis part would be ok, but the music still is so uncool. There are like 5 artists still in print such as Tori Amos that I feel that I am ratified as a human being by. (others include PJ Harvey, the vestiges of the Smashing Pumpkins, etcetera) and I don't want to name the wrong artist to someone who doesn't understand my affinity for those two, but when I'm picking Jim Croce on the retired crowd's radio station over new music today, there is something horrible about the taste of men and women going through their mid life crisis and acting like they run the social climate for music. No chances are taken, no conviction is in the music anymore.

Is it me? Help!!!

It's no different than all media run business. The fashion industry is an even bigger joke in my opinion. Young and hip kids buying the latest fashions from middle aged designers! Hilarious.

I have to agree that a lot of commercial music is lacking in all departments except maybe the clothes department. But you have to remember that if other people did not buy those albums, there would not be so many companies pushing out junk. That is why it is even more powerful to hear music like Tori Amos and the other artists who move our souls. So, I feel lucky to hear the good stuff when it comes around and just try to ignore the rest. Anyone can get a voice coach and work out and wear skimpy clothes and makeup but not many can reach within their own soul and pull out a masterpiece. Hey and Tori was in Y Can't Tori Read and it helped make her the woman she is now. So I hope it will inspire more female artists in Hollywood to take Tori's path of enlightenment. I wish all the female artists out there a truly inspiring experience to propel them into imaginative bliss so we can all have grand music. ...

P.S. my poetry will be published in Sept. 2008 of Baltimore's Poet's Ink

Fiona...

I also think Amy Lee has a little bit of it in her.

But then again, we just have to wait and see.
Regina Spektor also

The public's perception of an artist nowdays is a skanky little girl that sends her diary to a team of songwriters. Real singer/songwriters are a dying breed in the 2000's.

You forgot to mention Alanis Morissette, lol, but as long as you mention PJ and Tori it's fine!!!
I think it will change. If a new, undiscovered singer-songwriter stands up, he/she would be damn popular. It all depends on the time when you release something. Like Alanis. If she had released Jagged Little Pill in the early 90s, along with Tori and PJ, no-one would've liked her. But she did it at a time when there were only boring, smothering love songs without any conviction. Consequence ==> everyone was crazy about Jagged Little Pill. It's time for another singersongwriter to take a chance, cuz soon people that listen to music will soon need something deep that's truly about something with beautiful lyrics and innovating music.
