I want to pick your brain - I want to know how your ideas and the "girls" come to you. Do they introduce themselves formally, or merely collapse in front of you, wearing their emotions on their sleeves? Is it a little of everything? There seems to be some sort of cosmic connection between her and almost every female fan I have met - including myself. Every new cd, every song on it, somehow fits perfectly into my current reality (actually, that's a lie - 'rasberry swirl' is the only song she has ever done that sounds to me as though it's totally contrived for the time period - it never seemed like natural flow for her, almost forced.... I guess I am just making excuses for not caring for the song.. sorry, t.! : ( ) I can associate most everything on her cd's with an event or flashback to the exact emotion I was having the first time I heard the song. "Little Earthquakes" ushered me into art school, and opened my eyes to the fact that I was not alone in the way I had been treated in each relationship I had or was having in my life..."Under the Pink" accompanied me through expecting my first child, and the angst, bliss, and bewilderment that motherhood comes with... "Boys for Pele" came into and out of my life over the years, but the night I saw her perform "Father Lucifer" on Saturday Night Live, OMG!!! I had never seen her live in any venue in person so what a treat for the eyes and libido!! Thanks to that viewing, I became pregnant again! The other important cd's have been "Scarlet's Walk", taking me into my first full blown lesbian relationship and bringing me out of the closet - it was also the first time Iever got to see her in concert - twice! - and, of course, "The Beekeeper" - she held my hand night after night as my life with my girlfriend crumbled before my eyes... and helped me to realize that I was not invisible, violence was not the answer in any situation, and I did deserve to take care of myself and could do so without "her" in my life, pulling my strings at her leisure. Now, I have my "Posse" - taking me through the glories of single life, the battles for my mother's life yet again, and my struggle to be healthy in every way. Reminding me of my teenage days, how senseless hate is, the sensuality of true love, and that silly is still a good thing to be! "A Piano" fits nicely into every aspect of life, being that it is a retrospective and cumulative body of her work - and the bootlegs, and "Scarlet's Hidden Treasures" - they have homes of their own in my heart and soul..
If you ever read this stuff, T., know that you have my unending respect, admiration, and curiosity... I adore you, and would love to have you in a more real way in my life...
